James D. Brubaker, President of Physical Production at Universal Studios (2003-2008) is one of the motion picture industry's most respected and accomplished producers and studio executive.
During his lengthy career, he has worked on countless motion pictures and television shows. His most recent producing credits include: Bruce Almighty with Jim Carrey, Jennifer Aniston, and Morgan Freeman; Dragonfly with Kevin Costner; The Nutty Professor and The Nutty Professor 2 starring Eddie Murphy; Life featuring Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence; Gia with Angelina Jolie (the 1998 Director’s Guild Outstanding Movie for Television); and Liar, Liar with Jim Carrey.
While Physical Production President at Universal Pictures he oversaw over 55 films. During this tenure Universal steadily increased it’s market share and in 2007 Universal Pictures posted its highest grossing year.
Starting as a driver at MGM after a stint in the army, Jim eventually headed transportation at the studio before moving over to production. He was the Production Manager on Raging Bull, Comes A Horseman and New York, New York; Associate Producer of Rhinestone, Rocky III and True Confessions; Line Producer of Patty Hearst, and Co-Producer of Rambo III. Additional Executive Producer credits include most of Sylvester Stallone’s films in the 1980’s (Over The Top, Cobra and Rocky IV); A Walk In The Clouds with Keanu Reeves and Anthony Quinn; and The Right Stuff.
Jim has been a lecturer and teacher at UCLA; served as an advisor to student filmmakers at USC; and presently serves on the board of Streetlights, a program that trains disadvantaged inter-city youth in film crafts. He often creates opportunities for trainees on his films providing them with experiences necessary to forge careers in the industry.
He is a current member of the Los Angeles Sports and Entertainment Commission, and served on the Los Angeles Film Commission Task Force (1994-1995). He is a member of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, The Director’s Guild of America, The Producer’s Guild of America, and the Teamsters Union.
Jim is continuing his relationship with Universal Pictures on an Executive Level as a Liaison but is looking forward to getting back to his film producing roots.
