LEADERSHIP FOR FILM COMMISSIONERS

Course Description: As film commissions, you set the gold standard for leadership in the film industry. Every day, your work touches many different types of individuals in the entertainment world, and you must be able to develop and implement various skills and strategies that encourage positive behavior. This course will provide an examination of various leadership skills with an emphasis on promoting effective and efficient ways to improve film commission operations and performance. Topics include: Effective leadership styles, negotiations for Film Commissioners; problem solving and conflict resolution, interpersonal skills, and industry ethics.

 

 

THE FILM COMMISSION PROFESSIONAL

Course Description: The Film Commission Professional is a one-day course that builds on the information presented in the Film Commission Fundamentals online course (Prerequisite*).  Students in the course will explore important topics including the business aspects of film production, effective marketing techniques, economic impact and reporting, and the importance of alliances and partnerships such as working with government and economic development officials, crews, guilds, and unions. 

* Film Commission Fundamentals is an online course and a prerequisite for Film Commission Professional that will give you an overview of all aspects of film commission work. Topics of study include film commission operations, marketing your jurisdiction, an overview of economic development, film incentives programs, scouting, location photography, working with production and clients and working within the local jurisdiction. The course is now available through the Professional Development Section of the AFCI Members Area.

Film Commission offices seeking full membership status must have at least one staff member take both Film Commission Fundamentals (FCF, available online only), and Film Commission Professional.

 

 

ADVANCED STUDIES IN FILMMAKING

Course Description: Understanding how films are created, made and distributed is an important aspect of being a film commissioner. While you may never be in a position to create, shoot or distribute a film, your understanding of the process will help those production representatives you work with every week. This course will take a look at the most important aspects of film making. Topics include: Finding and using material, working with writers, raising financing, getting a green light, shooting a movie, post production, distribution and marketing, and the future of the industry as it relates to technology.
