Malaga Film Shoots Increase By 17%

During 2011, Malaga Film Office, a non-profit public organisation funded by the local City Council of Malaga, has continued to generate benefits for the city thanks to an increase in film shoots from the previous year of 17%, which has translated into an investment of almost €1,500,000.

The results obtained for the year by the One-stop Film Office, which is linked to the Malaga Film Festival, and belongs to the Malaga City Council’s Department of Culture, have been despite the international crisis that is affecting the world of broadcasting.

Out of the 365 projects assisted over 2011, 151 productions were filmed, which is 17% more than the previous year, as well as processing a total of 234 shoot permits in coordination with the various municipal departments.

The direct economic investment in the city through these productions has also increased by 15,5% since 2010, bringing in €1,439,149.

These efforts represent an engine of wealth for the city in sectors such as tourism (hotels, restaurants, transport, etc.), promoting employment (contracting local professionals from the audiovisual industry), as well as contributing to diffuse the image of the city on the international spectrum.

Among the productions filmed in Málaga during 2011, certain shoots are to be highlighted, such as; Spanish TV Movies Luna Llena and Mi Gitana and Sweden's TV Movie A Place in the Sun, Spanish short films such as El Amor a los 20 años, Pescaíto Frito, etc.;

The popular Andalusian TV series, Arrayan, stands out yet another year for being the most frequent production to film in the city; in regards to TV programs, Spanish productions have been filmed in Malaga, such as Comer, Beber, Amar and Me Cambio de Familia, as well as foreign TV programs such as; UK productions A Taste of Summer and The Hour Travel Show; Norway’s Malaga and Costa del Sol and Japan’s Legend of Golf, among others. Spanish Documentaries have also been filmed, such as; Destino Malaga, as well as Foreign Documentaries such as; the Spanish-Dutch Co-production Blind Fortune, and the Japanese productions Europe, travel by water, Picasso’s Blue Period and Living abroad, in addition to the Korean production Blue Ocean Tourism;

Amongst the Commercials that have been filmed in Malaga, productions such as; Still Photography Shoots for Davidoff (Switzerland), Young Magazine (Japan), Ford Transit and Bentley (both UK Productions), C & A (The Netherlands) that repeats every year; as well as Commercial Shoots for Unicaja (Spain), No Pierdas el Sur (Spain), Honda (England), Kia (Germany). Among the Video Shoots, Corporate Films are highlighted, such as; 17th edition of French Cinema in Malaga; Andalusia- Sport for Life; Honda Civic-Europe, General Optics and Food Messenger; the German Music Video for Clueso: Running; and the Spanish Institutional Video titled La Ruta Heraclea.

In addition to counseling, recruiting productions and processing film permits in order to promote Malaga as a Film Location & Set, the Malaga Film Office performs other promotional activities through their website www.malagafimoffice.com, which has been translated into English, German, Chinese, Japanese and soon will also include Korean; as well as maintaining membership with various networks such as; Andalucia Film Commission (AFC), Spain Film Commission (SFC), European Film Commissions Network (EUFCN) and the Association of Film Commissions International (AFCI). It also continues its internationalization process by attending International Film Festivals such as the acclaimed CANNES and SAN SEBASTIAN Festivals, where Málaga has been promoted as an ideal Film Location for its excellent position, weather & worldwide connections, and from which there have been several projects that have shown interest to take place in 2012.
